One of my favorite ways to connect with other small business owners is through creative trades!! When we combine skills, everyone walks away with something valuable — and usually with content we wouldn’t have created otherwise.

After I posted on Threads asking if anyone local would be interested in a service trade, Dakota of Wolfecutz reached out. We decided on a simple exchange: she’d do my hair, and I’d create a set of branding photos for her business while I was there!

Trades like this are one of my favorite ways to collaborate, and I’d absolutely do it again.

Creative Trades = Win-Win

Running a small business means constantly balancing creativity, growth, and budget. With so many business owners being more mindful of expenses right now, creative trades can be a really positive way to support each other while still getting what you need.

For this collaboration, Dakota received a full set of branding images she can use across her website and social media, and I walked away with a much needed hair refresh. It felt like a true exchange of value — thoughtful, intentional, and genuinely beneficial on both sides.

Trades like this make it possible to invest in professional services, build stronger local connections, and create meaningful work without everything having to revolve around cash. When the fit is right, collaborations like this can be energizing, practical, and creatively fulfilling!

Capturing Personality, Process, and Detail

Dakota specializes in color and curls, so the goal for this branding session was to showcase both her technical skill and her personality. We focused on a variety of images, including:

  • In-action shots of her working with a client’s curls
  • Lifestyle branding images that feel natural and approachable
  • Macro product and texture shots that add depth to her visual brand

For salon owners and stylists, branding photography goes far beyond a headshot. Showing your process, your space, and the experience clients can expect builds trust before they ever book an appointment.

I LOVE projects like this, especially when they let me work with local small businesses in the greater Cleveland area in a fun, collaborative way. If you’re a stylist, salon owner, or service-based business and think we might make a good team — whether through a trade or a regular session — I’d be happy to chat and see what we can create together!
