Sometimes the Most Meaningful Wedding Photos Aren’t the Ones You Planned For

As a photographer, I spend a lot of time documenting important moments in other people’s lives. Every once in a while, though, a session comes along that reminds me just how meaningful photographs can be.

This spring, I had the honor of photographing a rehearsal dinner for a bride who had unknowingly played a small but important role in my own wedding story years ago.

My Story: A Wedding Born From Unexpected Circumstances

When my husband and I got married, it wasn’t under the circumstances we had imagined.

We were in the middle of a difficult custody battle for our niece and made the decision to elope with hopes of it helping strengthen our case. We loved each other, had already built a life together, and knew marriage was in our future regardless. The timing wasn’t ideal, but the commitment was.

The night before our ceremony, we happened to run into a friend whose girlfriend offered to help out by taking photos. She wasn’t a photographer. She didn’t have professional equipment. She simply showed up out of kindness and spent the day documenting our wedding using my own camera.

Mandy did an incredible job.

At a time when so much of the experience felt rushed and overshadowed by heartache, those photographs became something we treasured. They helped preserve the joy that existed alongside the difficult circumstances.

The Photos That Mean More As Time Goes On

A year and a half later, we celebrated with a second ceremony. This time we invited all of our family and friends to enjoy a very DIY yet beautiful wedding and reception with us.

Of course I invited Mandy!

She came to our hotel early and captured the getting-ready process for me since I couldn’t afford to have a photographer there all day, and because of where she happened to be seated at the reception, she ended up capturing some of my favorite images and videos from our first dance and other moments I still revisit years later.

She may not realize it, but she gave us gifts that have only become more valuable with time. Twice!

A Chance to Return the Favor

Fast forward to this spring!

A few days before her own wedding, I reached out to congratulate her. During our conversation, she casually asked if I would be interested in photographing her rehearsal dinner. She hadn’t booked photography coverage for the event, but she wanted to document as much of the wedding weekend as possible.

I didn’t hesitate, I was honored!!

There are very few opportunities in life to give back to someone who helped you during an important chapter of your own story. This felt like one of them.

Capturing the Night Before “I Do”

That evening, I photographed their rehearsal, took portraits of the couple on the rainy streets of Cleveland before dinner, and documented the start of the evening’s celebrations.

As I was editing the gallery later, I kept thinking about the role this bride had unknowingly played in preserving memories from my own wedding years ago. At the time, neither of us could have imagined that we’d eventually find ourselves on the other side of the camera together.

The photos turned out anywhere from blurry to stunning, but what’s most important is that they exist at all. And if there’s anything I’ve learned from my own experience, it’s that you can’t always predict which images you’ll return to years later. Often, it’s not the formal, polished moments—it’s the quieter ones in between.

Rehearsal dinners are full of those kinds of moments. They’re often overlooked, but they hold some of the most candid parts of the entire wedding weekend: people arriving, reconnecting, and settling into the days ahead.

They’re moments worth documenting.
